Example Abandoned Natural Arch

NABSQNO 13S-241113-4098592. It is amazing that this spectacular abandoned natural arch is so little known. Cox Canyon Arch is located above Cox Canyon, a mere 250 yards south of the Colorado - New Mexico border, about 13 miles north of Aztec, San Juan County, New Mexico. It is shown as "Natural Arch" on the 1985 USGS quad Cedar Hill. Access is via mineral exploration roads off of highway 550, followed by a complex bushwack.

Cox Canyon Arch has eroded from San Jose sandstone. Vreeland included it in his catalog as number 17-11 and reported a span of 43 feet and a height of 35 feet.
