Index Page 36 - Ozaneare Area |
INTRODUCTION: The Ozaneare locality is located 3 hours of hiking east from Jabbaren site. The main site of Ozaneare is located on the top of a cliff overhanging the large canyon valley of Oued Tabarakat. The canyon valley to the south shelters at less three cypress trees. The most"significant" natural arch of the area (Ozaneare Arch) is located on a little "sky city of rocks" above the cliff. The northeastern part of the area is a long row of low rock masses and outcropping rock. The nearest site of Rayeye, located 45 minutes walk to the north, does not harbor major arches. However, the author recommends a visit to Rayeye also for the two majestic cypress trees and the interesting all-year-round "guelta" situated in a narrow passage next to the trees in the wash. |
ALG-514, Ozaneare Arch, Ozaneare Area. 10 meter span (measured). From the official campsite of Ozaneare (small colored archlette and caprocks), walk south along Oued Tabarakat 300 meters to a wash confluence. Walk up the drainage 100 meters (east) and climb up the slope on the right to reach the top of the cliff. Walk through rock masses 500 meters to this arch. Note the author beside the opening for scale. |
ALG-515, Lozenge Arch II, Ozaneare Area. 4 meter span (estimated). This arch is located behind ALG-514 (Ozaneare Arch), to the east. |

ALG-519, unnamed arch 120, Ozaneare Area. 2 meter span (estimated). This arch is located 400 meters to the southeast of ALG-514 (Ozaneare Arch) on a gully carved in outcropping rocks. |
ALG-520, Tilted Leg Arch, Ozaneare Area. 6.2 meters span by 2.3 meters height (both measured). GPS 32N 577693 2714669. From the official campsite of Ozaneare (on the side of Oued Tabarakat), hike northeast 20 minutes to reach an area of low rock masses (not the way to Rayeye site). This area is off of the classic trail. Then continue another 20 minutes in the same direction across the row of rocks to this beautiful arch. Mohamed Bilali inside the arch give the scale (the little wonder and the great man). |
ALG-521, Arch View Window, Ozaneare Area. 1.1 meter span by 1.0 meter height (both measured). This arch is located 80 meters west of ALG-520 (Tilted Leg Arch). This small opening permits a photo of ALG-520 through the window. Note that the name "window" is not a type of natural arch. |
ALG-522, unnamed arch 121, Ozaneare Area. 1.5 meter span (main opening/estimated). This small double arch is located 800 meters north of ALG-521 (Arch View Window). |
ALG-523, Temidoi Arch, Ozaneare Area. 4.7 meters span by 4.0 meters height (both measured) GPS 32N 578415 2714734. This nice arch is located 1500 meters to the east of ALG-520 (Tilted Leg Arch) in the middle of a large esplanade (outcropping rock). Temidoi means "friendship" in the Tamahaq dialect. Mohamed Bilali and the author provide scale under the arch. Photo taken in late afternoon. |
